The climate emergency requires effective and immediate action. More and more companies are taking climate action thanks to the senior management engagement. The decarbonization of the economy will only be possible by joining efforts and knowledge through collaboration between companies and sectors. A good example of this in the wine industry is INTERNATIONAL WINERIES FOR CLIMATE ACTION (IWCA), a collaborative working group tackling the climate emergency through innovative carbon reduction strategies and which is part of the RACE TO ZERO campaign of the United Nations.

06-02-2023 13:15 06-02-2023 14:00 Europe/Madrid Vineyard soil management in the face of climate change

The wine is marketed by its origin (DO, pago wine, etc.), according to its qualities, depending on environmental conditions. There is no agricultural production where soils are more revered than in viticulture, since the flavor and aroma of the wine are the result of complex factors (terroir), among which the soil is of great importance, as are the varieties of vine, so it is considered that the quality and style of the wine depends on the place where the vineyard is grown. In the current context of climate change, soil conservation is an aspect to be seriously considered, preferably against erosion, which can be aggravated by this change, and against physical and chemical degradation. The soil management becomes extremely important, taking into account that the wide diversity of soils in the national territory and the different climatic conditions to which the soils are subjected, require a timely adaptation of cultivation techniques.

The “Magnificent 7” of the wonderful Priorat

Ramon Francàs
Ramon Francàs La Vanguardia Journalist

06-02-2023 13:30 06-02-2023 14:30 Europe/Madrid The “Magnificent 7” of the wonderful Priorat

Priorat, in Catalonia (Spain), is one of the most interesting areas with great scoring in prestigious wine guidelines as The Wine Advocate. Its spectacular vineyards on slopes and terraces, with truffles slate soils and with the predominance of the autochthonous Garnacha and Cariñena red varieties, offer the miracle of being able to bottle a landscape of great telluric force.

Priorat practices in heroic agriculture and attracts like a powerful magnet. Its wines rank the highest scores and menus of the most select restaurants in the world. This small but wonderful area, which for more than two decades has captivated me, is still gaining worldwide prestige.

That's why I wanted to gather seven Unicorns from Priorat, the most laureated by Parker. I want to show the utmost distinction in a tast that I hope will be unforgettable. They're My Magnificent Seven from Priorat (without shooting and without Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen and Charles Bronson).

Geologists divide the Iberian Peninsula into three large blocks. Siliceous to the west, Calcareous to the east and Clayey in the middle, in the Meseta. We propose a journey through these three Spains through the wines of Pago de los Capellanes and O Luar do Sil.

We will not stay on the surface: we will take pickaxe and shovel to dig deep into each soil and discover its incredible nuances. Why the boulders on the banks of the Douro are so different from the limestone that covers the moors. What is special about the granite and what is special about the slate of Valdeorras. Why clays and sands give such different expressions. Finally, we will explore a territory that is almost from another planet: the red hills of Fuentenebro, south of Ribera del Duero. Under its old vines, mica veins of the "muscovite" type, unique in the Peninsula, are hidden. What do these soils contribute? We will find out with the new Pago de los Capellanes wine, as yet unnamed, which we will taste in exclusive preview at Barcelona Wine Week.

his masterclass will explore the range value of old vineyards and heritage varieties in Spain. While Spain is thought to have more old vines than any other country, the profile of old vine wine and heritage in Spain is just emerging. While Spain does not yet have a high profile collective campaign to promote its old vine heritage and wines, many talented producers and growers are achieving global recognition and renown for their wines originating from old vineyards. This session will consider the global context for old vine heritage and the cultural, genetic, and economic value of old vines and heritage viticulture. We will then explore the research institutes, companies and individuals who are working to protect and promote old vines in Spain, and to make world-class and highly distinctive wines. We will consider what needs to be done in Spain to raise the profile of and protection of old vine heritage.

06-02-2023 18:00 06-02-2023 18:45 Europe/Madrid Poor soils. Rich wines. Alicante PDO diversity

Alicante has a combination of soils that gives diversity and Mediterranean expression to its wines.

From vineyards at zero altitude such as the muscatels or mesegueras of the Natural Park of La Mata, or the vineyards by the sea in the Marina Alta area. To extremely poor soils, of ancient limestone, with which a rich marble industry has been made, and at the same time, capable of supporting the life of Monastrell vines in dry land. Or vineyards of more than 600 meters of altitude in front of the sea. Valleys where the humidity arrives or wind corridors where the levante, the gregal, and other sea winds also changeable and diverse.

If to these conditions we add the variety of grapes: monastrell, valencies, garnachas, forcallat, etc. it multiplies variables in this zone marked by its triangular northeast situation towards Africa (cape of the Nao in the peninsula as compass).

It is also important for us to talk about the current extreme situation of land management in some regions.

DOQ Priorat wines have established themselves as world-class wines in recent years. Currently, in Priorat, the vineyard is at the limit of survival and the situation of vulnerability is worsening with climate change. Antoni Sánchez-Ortiz has analyzed in his doctoral thesis (Cum Laude by the URV) how Garnatxa and Carinyena, the two native varieties, adapt to and express the slopes and terraces of poor slate soils in a Mediterranean terroir of this hardness.

Rioja is a true melting pot of climates, valleys, reliefs, municipalities, landscapes, grape varieties and colors, hardly comparable to other regions. Centuries of cultivation in these places and climates forged the mastery of the blending technique and the creation of styles of red wines aged in barrels of great consistency, which have been widely recognized and have become a worldwide reference. Rioja is moving with the times and today places a new emphasis on showing the great diversity of terroirs and microclimates of the appellation with the incorporation of figures such as "Singular Vineyard" or "Vinos de Municipio" wines.

This year 2023, Spain was elected as the seat of the 44th World Congress of Vine and Wine and the 21st General Assembly of the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV) held in Cadiz and Jerez de la Frontera, respectively, from 5 to 9 June. The slogan chosen for this year's Congress, 'Vitiviniculture and Information Technologies', highlights the importance of new technologies in the present and future of the wine sector. A digitization that contrasts with the long vinicultural tradition of different areas in Spain, such as the Sedi region of Congress: the province of Cadiz has been producing wines for more than 3,000 years. The Congress will offer an exceptional opportunity for the potentially wine-growing part of Spain and also know a unique environment, where the culture, art and tradition of wine in our country, shake hands. A tribute to the past without losing sight of the future.

07-02-2023 13:30 07-02-2023 14:30 Europe/Madrid Familia Torres: four approaches to the soils of Priorat

Miguel Torres and the winemaker Jordi Foraster, will conduct a horizontal tasting of 2019 vintage of their Priorat wines, which represent four different approaches to this region of llicorella soils: Secret del Priorat reflects the diversity from a selection of varieties and vineyards distributed throughout the territory; Salmos shows the typicality of their own vineyards in Porrera; Perpetual is the expression of hundred-year-old vines from five villages and Mas de la Rosa, the most exclusive wine from Familia Torres, is the ultimate singularity, the most faithful and hedonistic expression of the historic Porrera estate of the same name, where old vines of Garnacha and Cariñena grow in steep hills of llicorella. Familia Torres planted its first vineyards in Priorat in the 1990s, although its relationship with this prodigious region started in the early 20th century. Today it has more than 70 hectares of vineyards in Porrera and El Lloar.

Sustainability and environmental preservation have become increasingly attractive as selling points, but are they really effective at increasing sales? Do we know how to communicate all the measures we apply in the winery? What do consumers value and how should cellars convey the work they do in environmental preservation?

Outstanding round table that brings together three viticulturists who offer us an in-depth knowledge of the different soils they cultivate and the influence on their wines. Indomitable grounds that stand out for their uniqueness and, above all, for the difficulty and effort involved to work on. Three different and distant lands that draw a big triangle on our wine map and whose climatic influence marks the personality of the extraordinary wines that will be tasted.

Premiumization in the Wine Industry

07-02-2023 16:50 07-02-2023 17:35 Europe/Madrid Premiumization in the Wine Industry

Premiumization is the buzzword, but what does it really mean? -- The wine market is highly competitive, in which substitute products abound that can lead to the "commoditization" of certain segments and types of products, where price becomes the main differentiator and with the consequent downward trend. Premiumization is the attempt to motivate consumers to pay more for a brand, but it's not as simple as raising prices. This seminar covers different premiumization strategies that participants in the wine sector can apply to escape the downward spiral of prices and margin erosion.

Influence of soil type on Tempranillo grapes and wines

Dr. José Mª Martínez Vidaurre
Dr. José Mª Martínez Vidaurre Instituto de Ciencias de la Vid y del Vino - ICVV Researcher

07-02-2023 17:50 07-02-2023 18:35 Europe/Madrid Influence of soil type on Tempranillo grapes and wines

What influence does the soil have on grape production and the quality of musts and wines? To answer this question, the relationships between the physical-chemical properties of the soil and the parameters of vineyard development and the composition of the must and Tempranillo wine (Vitis vinifera L.) in the DOCa Rioja (Rioja Alta Subzone) were studied. 7 soil types with distinctive edaphic characteristics were described and 17 vineyard plots were selected. In the vineyard, measurements were made of base water potential and nutritional status at veraison, vigor parameters and yield components. Finally, the musts at harvest were analyzed and wines were produced in the micro-staircase and in the cellar. The results indicated that the useful water reserve together with the available nitrogen are the most relevant edaphic parameters. The soil factor affected the mineral nutrition of the vineyard, the vigor parameters and the color-determining compounds of musts and wines.

08-02-2023 10:30 08-02-2023 11:30 Europe/Madrid The relationship between the vegetation of the land and the aromas of the wine: Biodiversity Project

The uniqueness of a wine is influenced by several factors such as the grape variety, the soil, the microclimate and the environment of the vineyard. The Biodiversity project developed by the Catalan Institute of Vine and Wine shows how the botanical landscape around the vineyards influences the aromas of the wines made there. Wines from the wineries that are part of this project will be tasted and compared with their aromas: Vinyes Domènech, Castell de Perelada, La Fou, La Gravera, Huguet de Can Feixes and La Fou.

Copying or imitating those who succeed is not always the most advisable. It is much better to be authentic, study the context and take the appropriate steps. It is time for Spanish wine to put aside its inferiority complex, look at itself, analyze it, and act.
